Edger by David Beem

Edger by David Beem

Meet Edger (Ed-jer), a twenty-six-year-old gadget retail dork destined to become the world’s first superhero! His superpower: the ability to channel the Collective Unconscious, a psychic network connecting the living and the dead. In his arsenal are the skills of Bruce Lee, the strength of Samson, the wisdom of the ages...and the dancing chops of Michael Jackson—including that one twisty foot move, crotch grab, and fedora tilt. But there's a catch... Like every psychic superpower to get administered through a hypodermic needle, this one comes with a prick. Someone seems to have misplaced the booster necessary for stabilizing his superpower. Without it, Edger has three days before his brain turns to pudding. Join our Dork of Destiny as he overcomes the world’s greatest butt, two rival Cluck-n-Pray gangs, an evil cow, a Green Bay Defensive Tackle, rifle-toting assassins—and a pair of stoners who inadvertently create the world’s first supervillain after a wild night on Twitter!

Magnificent Agony by Katie Mettner #review

Title: Magnificent Agony
Author: Katie Mettner
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Cover Designer: Carrie Butler at Forward Authority Design Services
Hosted by: Lady Amber's PR

Blurb:
Eve Darling has learned one very important lesson in her twenty-six years; life never goes according to plan
The night of her high school graduation her heart was bursting with hopes and dreams for the future, but the universe had other ideas. Instead of New York and culinary school, she stayed in Magnificent, Wisconsin. Barely an adult herself, Eve was irrevocably tasked with becoming a mother to her big brother, Davis, the man with the heart and mind of a five-year-old boy. Now, eight years later, she’s become a successful entrepreneur, chef, and businesswoman. All of those responsibilities came at a price and her personal life was payment. No one was more acutely aware of that than she was.
And then, with one phone call, everything changed.
‘After life organizer’ Abraham Von Sallage was like no funeral director Eve had ever met. He was young, charming, witty, and had a unique perspective on life, because his business, was death. They both carried burdens society couldn’t, or wouldn’t, acknowledge, and in those burdens, they found an instantaneous connection. That night, as Abraham stood in the doorway of her cooking school, she saw hope in his eyes.
And then her world crumbled.
An inexplicably cruel twist of fate calls into question everything she knows about life, and death. With her soul adrift in guilt, she clung to the only person she could trust to save her from the agony her life has become. Shrouded by grief, it would take the love of one man, and the resolve of an entire community, to show her just how magnificent life can be.

Read an excerpt of the book:

The birds come frozen? Eve didn’t tell me they come frozen! I felt myself hyperventilating a little bit. What do I do now?
“Abraham?”
I turned quickly, my hand losing its grip on the frozen hen in my hand. It went flying and missed the woman by no more than a hair. It landed on the floor with a clunk, took out a display of cracker boxes, and rolled a few feet where it came to rest, spinning slowly on its breast.
“Did I scare you?” she asked amused and I leaned against the large freezer.
“You didn’t tell me the birds are frozen!” I exclaimed.
She took step back and tried to hide her smile. “I guess I assumed everyone would already know that. I’ll make sure to add that to the syllabus for the course.”
“Eve, what am I going to do? My aunt and uncle are going to be here in,” I checked my watch, “seven hours and the birds are frozen!”
She held her hands out to calm me. “This isn’t the end of the world. We have options.”
“Options?” I shook the list at her. “It doesn’t say on the list the birds are frozen. What options are left?”
She was giggling by the time I finished my tirade. She snapped the list out of my hand. “It’s Sunday, right?” she asked and I nodded, perturbed as I was. “Well, I know for a fact Bob will have a fresh chicken or two in the back.”
“What good will that do us? I don’t know how to cook chicken!”
She shook her head at me as if to say, ‘Dude, take a pill.’
“Whether we cook four little birds or one big bird the result is the same, right?”
I huffed a little and picked up the offending hen off the floor. “It won’t look as fancy though. The little hens all done up with the stuffing looked nice at class.”
She put my hands back on the cart handle and set her own basket inside it. She steered me towards the meat department in the back of the store, while trying to soothe my ruffled feathers, no pun intended.
“We can make a chicken look just as fancy, if not fancier, than the game hens, and with a bigger bird it’s more forgiving. If you overcook it a little bit, no one will notice.”
“I hadn’t thought of that,” I mused as I stopped in front of the meat counter. “Oh, who am I kidding? I haven’t thought of anything. Why did I offer to make dinner? This is going to be a disaster.”
She laughed at me softly and I stopped my whining to listen. It was soft and joyous. It reminded me of the music that played from the transistor radio belonging to old Mrs. Mallard every Sunday.
“Hey, Darling, I didn’t expect to see you here. You usually spend Sunday with Davis,” Bob’s voice boomed from behind the counter.
I looked up at our very knowledgeable and overzealous butcher, who was leaning over the counter addressing Eve.
“Not today, Bob, I have a client. It’s a last minute thing and I need a chicken. I’m hoping you have a fresh one hiding back there for me.”
“A client, you say? Are you doing someone a favor again and making their dinner, so they can take credit for it?”
She bounced on the balls of her feet and grinned. “Something like that. I’m helping a friend. I don’t have time to defrost a bird, so if you don’t have a chicken, we’ll have to move to a nice roast.”
He held up his finger and twirled around, and I mean literally twirled around like a ballerina, and trotted back through the small doorway that led to the coolers.
“Eve, what are you doing?” I whispered, looking around the store for anyone we knew.
“I’m helping a friend,” she answered out of one side of her lip. “He’s having a bird about the birds, so I’m trying to find a bird that will stop the birding.”
I started to laugh, trying to hold it in, but failing miserably. I was in a full on giggle attack by the time Bob came back through the door. I had to cover my mouth and look anywhere, but at her.
Bob held up a stripped down chicken as though it was a newborn baby. “Look at this beauty. I wasn’t sure what I would do with her. She’s so big. Just look at those breasts.”

My review:

If you are looking for a light Contemp Romance, this is not the book. If you are looking for a meaty, plot driven story Magnificent Agony is what you are looking for. Being a person that is totally immersed in her family to the point of being suffocating, this book was a hard read for me. I am glad I powered through it and read it though.

First off, the character's are likable, relatable and adorable. I am sucker for any small town story. I lived a good chunk of my adult life in New England and I currently live in the Midwest so small town is all I have ever known. Second, the bare bones of the story - phenomenal. I could easily see this as a plot to a movie. It had antagonist's, heroines/heroes and a roller coaster of emotions. I genuinely fell in love with the characters. I think the character being embroiled in the foodie lifestyle helped too, it made her feel like a friend of mine.

I only have two criticisms. The story can be wordy. I found myself skimming parts because there was either too many descriptive passages going on or the characters were going off on tangents. In other parts I felt like it focused too much on dialogue and not enough on the scene itself, it can be a little distracting and I had to go back and re-read parts. The second was at points it gets a little preachy. I am by no means a non-religious person but I feel like it came out of nowhere in the book. It almost didn't feel organic to the story because it wasn't mentioned in the first part of the book. The character's references are more spiritual in nature, I don't remember any denomination mentioned but I just wanted to note it for people because I was thrown a bit off guard at first.

Having been privy to the difficulties and rewards of having special needs people in a family, this book depicted it with class. It also depicted death and aftermath pretty well. You often forget there are people outside of your inner circle that can help and want to help. Family is hard and if it wasn't than it wouldn't be worth it. Abraham reminded me a lot of my husband. I think more men are like him than a lot of people realize. Eve and Abraham's romance was special. Some times in life you just know. There is not reason you do, you just do. My marriage of 20 years is proof of it. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't a total instalove kinda thing, but I like that once they knew they didn't feel the need to make excuses for it.

A book worth reading, definitely inspirational. 4 stars from me.

Top 5 Whisper of the Skyborne Moments

Writing a book takes more than a minute. Getting that book to publication takes even longer. By the time you get to publication, you’re lucky if you still like the book. So, here’s the top five things I love about this book.

Life Moment #5 – Discovering How the Spytfire Falcon Connection Works
The spytfire falcon bonding to humans idea with my sister’s. She’s the reason Devices of War survived. It nearly died several times. She wanted to have almost a Valdemar/companions deal. Almost. There are loads of other fantasy stories that have humans bonding to animals. It’s a lot of fun.
But I never really could get the idea to launch properly in my head. I knew about the Skyborne from inception, and that’s one thing I kept hidden even from her. So, trying to get the falcon idea to take off, knowing what the Skyborne were doing to the characters and the world, was rather a twist for me.
However, the moment I realized how to make it work was a huge eureka moment for me.
Life Moment #4 – Developing the new site!

OMW! I am having so much fun with this. I still have more information to put up, but the new site design allows me more freedom to share this amazing world with you! The world is breath-taking. The characters are great. I mean, I think they are. There are things that you don’t necessarily know about them through the books. Tidbits and morsels are being updated and uploaded whenever I get a free moment that, also, has a free bit of energy attached to it.
Life Moment #3 – Playing With Tea
This may sound silly, but I love tea. Adagio teas allows customers to create their own tea fandom sets. Seriously. You get to go in there, mix your own tea, slap a character sticker on it, and then order it in a tin. It’s amazing!
And the tea tastes GREAT! I’m going to giving some of these away through the release along with some diffusers. It’s awesome and fun!
Life Moment #2 – Getting To Know Neira
Neira was a surprise. I knew about the Skyborne and the Great Families, but while I was focused on them, I completely missed everyone else.
Neira didn’t and doesn’t. She is amazing. Experiencing her world through her eyes is eye-opening and breath-taking. I got to experience things I never would have thought of. She is such a strong woman, and so knowledgeable. Getting to know her through Whiskers was amazing. She’s probably my favorite character right now.
Life Moment #1 – Introducing All the POV’s
This is, without a doubt, the scariest thing I’ve done in writing. Introducing new POV’s into a 1st person story. It’s not just the fact that I added a couple of different POV’s. It’s the fact that I added them from so many different characters.
But this plot was too big for just Synn. I love the man, but he’s sometimes rather unobservant, which doesn’t help me very much. Sometimes, I just want to slug him.
The thing I absolutely loved is that each character has their own Voice, and you get to see that finally. You get to experience different parts of this world through each of their POV’s. It was a challenge. Super, super challenging, but I had so much fun with it, and I really think it added a lot to the story at large. I’m wildly excited about it and I hope you all like it, too.

How Redemption Worked Itself Into My Series Title by Bonnie R Paulson

How Redemption Worked Itself Into My Series Title

More often than not, we stand in our own way to overcoming fear of success. We don’t forgive ourselves for mistakes and we seldom believe others can or would. All too often, the desire to have the chance at redeeming ourselves makes us pass up the very thing we crave.

In the Redemption series, each woman desperately longs to overcome her past – each of which revolves around their shared father, Devlyn Caracus. He’s terrible. Or was. But he died and now the Federal Government is searching for the women to collect on a bank robbery amount.

So book #1 Romancing Redemption, Rosie doesn’t believe she deserves romance.

Book #2 Riding for Redemption, Sara Beth loves riding almost more than herself. When she loses the opportunity to ever ride again, she has to decide if that’s okay or if she needs more in her life.

Book #3 Resisting Redemption, Lisa doesn’t want a family – she thinks – and she doesn’t want to fall in love. Love is messy and she likes things the way they are.

Book #4 Regretting Redemption, Mary didn’t have the same experiences as the other women growing up. The more she learns, the more guilt she feels. Can she overcome her part in her past or will it haunt her out of love?

Book #5 Rewarding Redemption, Jenni isn’t sure what’s going on, but finding out about four sisters could put a huge damper on her plans – to find the Caracus treasure and be free of Montana altogether. Do familial ties trap her right where she doesn’t want to be? And in love to boot?

See, in each story as with the overall story arc, there’s a significant amount of self-forgiveness that has to happen. And that’s how I see it with everyday themes as well.

Is there anything in your life that keeps you up at night while you worry about its resolution? If it’s something you did, forgive yourself and breathe. Redemption is easier to grant than receive. I don’t know why, it just is.

Have you forgiven yourself lately and how did it make you feel?

Thank you so much for having me! This was a fun topic to write about. Stay Alive!
Redemptionseriessale3resistingredemptionThis is the third book in a series where the plot points carry over. All plot points will be resolved by book FIVE - the end of the series. This is a sweet style romance. With her heart at war with her mind, Lisa’s need to chase dangerous fun over boring responsibilities tugs at her emotions. Love is the last thing she expects to find, especially with her past revolting against her future. The only love Ryan’s heart has room for is for his motherless son. But, when he finds himself yearning for Lisa, Ryan has to convince himself and her that he’s all the thrill she’ll ever need. Will Lisa’s past destroy their future before either of them can accept the true meaning of love?

Read an excerpt from the book: Approx. 322 years after the apocalypse Chapter 1. The body lay on a two-piece metal pyre in the center of the clearing. Nothing more than the skeleton of a table, the pyre was simply used for the display and transport of the bodies. Burning the dead was a custom from the time before. The corpse’s blue cotton, long-sleeved shirt was buttoned all the way to the top to hide his injuries, and the matching navy slacks had recently been pressed. With his hands folded over his abdomen, Wesley looked rather dashing. Ashley wished her match had actually been dashing in life. She wondered who would wear that outfit next. Nothing was ever wasted on the island. Not even the clothes of a dead man. She herself had worn the clothes off a dead woman’s back. Squeamishness was a luxury no one could afford. Although “new” clothes were made on the island, from animal skins and the cotton grown in the farmlands, they were typically reserved for the higher ups—elders, doctors, and the like. Cotton was difficult to grow in the cold climate, and the clothes were made entirely by hand. Once it had been worn and patched a few times by those with power, new clothing was eventually passed down to the lower branches of society. But, it wasn’t just clothing that moved on after an islander died. All of their belongings were redistributed among those in need. The dead’s family wasn’t allowed to keep anything they didn’t need. Sentimentality was a lost emotion to the islanders. Reusing everything was essential, even if the previous owner was a dead man. It had only bothered her once—the first time she’d seen one of her father’s outfits on another man. Even then, at the tender age of ten, she’d understood it was bound to happen eventually. She just hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly. Only a week after his funeral, she’d spotted one of her neighbors walking down the road in her father’s clothes. She ran to him, hoping her father’s scent might still linger on his shirt. But the man neither embraced her nor offered her any sympathy. He only looked at her with wide eyes, the horror and disgust plain on his face. Death on the island was such a strange thing. She’d lost track of how many funerals she’d been to in her lifetime—at least one a month. Unexpected deaths, like that of her match, added to the average. Only three of the losses had actually meant something to her—her mother, her father, and now Wesley. Her father’s funeral was, of course, devastating, made more so by the fact that they’d shared the same first name. Everything the elders said about him could have also been applied to her. How they were thankful for “Ashley’s life,” how they wished “Ashley peace.” It sent shivers down her spine. Once, she’d asked him why they shared a name. His mother’s name had been Ashley, he’d explained, as had her mother, and her father before that. On and on, down the line, the name had traveled, until it had reached Ashley. And one day, as was their tradition, it would go to her own child. The funeral for her mother, who had been taken by a simple cold that escalated into something much worse, was nothing more than a hazy memory. Still, Ashley missed her mother terribly and felt incomplete without her. She searched for her whenever the jasmine got caught on the wind, because her mother had loved to wear the flower behind her ear. Wesley’s funeral was a problem. She wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about it. The loss of her parents had left her feeling completely alone. She’d hoped to find love again with her match, but he’d left her terribly disappointed. Now that he was gone, her emotions warred with themselves. Relief was the biggest player fighting for space in her mind. Relief to have escaped the abuse and the pressures of being the next elder’s wife. Guilt came in at a close second, but not because she regretted killing her match. It was because her best friend was being blamed for it.
