Playlist for Beach Blanket Bridesmaid by Margo Bond Collins

One of my favorite things about writing is finding exactly the right mood music to go with the story I'm working on!

In my new novella, Beach Blanket Bridesmaid, part of the Feel the Heat anthology, waitress Ava Jordan is stuck at her brother's beach wedding with her childhood crush, Grant—the man who walked away from her eighteen months ago after a one-night stand.  She decides she wants an island fling, but doesn't want anything serious. Unfortunately for her, Grant has decided that he can't let her go again!  Ultimately, all of the songs in this playlist represent Ava or Jake and their experiences—and they’re also the songs I listened to when I was writing the book.

I couldn't write a book set in Antigua without listening to a lot of typical island music—Bob Marley, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffet. But I also wanted to play with the fact that Ava and Grant are from a small town in Texas—this island trip is very much a departure from their usual lives. So this song is a mix of some of my favorite island songs and some of my favorite Texas country songs.

I’m a country girl, born in Tennessee and raised in Kentucky. I’m a roamer, but always come home because I love the small town atmosphere. It’s who I am. Life in my little corner of the world consists of long winter nights curled up by the fire, cheering on my favorite football teams in the fall, enduring March Madness in the spring and walking barefoot through my garden with a cold jar of sweet tea in the summer – fireflies at sunset accompanied by a serenade of crickets and frogs, and lazy summer nights in the porch swing with my beau.

Thank you for joining us today Chief McAvoy. Can you tell us why you became a cop?    I signed up for the Marines and scored well in my ASVAB test, and got to choose what MOS I wanted. So I picked military police. The moment I started training, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. To help people.

If you didn’t live in Beaver Creek, where would you want to live? Half Moon Bay California. After I got out of the military, I followed my friend out to where he grew up and instantly fell in love with the area.

Did you feel a connection to Jane immediately? The second I saw her face. I knew I had to keep her safe. And well, you would have to read the book to find out.

Why don’t you like people calling you Chief? I’m not worth of the title.

Do ghosts freak you out? I don’t believe in ghosts.

Why did Harold and Raymond fight over the dog, traitor? Traitor is Raymond’s black Lab, but the dog only listens to Harold. So that pisses Raymond off to no end. Actually, the brothers fight all the time for the stupidest crap.

If you can do one thing different in your life, what would that be? I think if I changed one thing in my life, I wouldn’t have met Jane. But If I had to choose…then drinking.

If you can’t be a cop, what other profession would you like to do? If I can’t be cop, then I probably open up a business of some sort—but I really haven’t thought about not being a cop.

Excerpt-

I’m going to check on the trails. I didn’t get a chance to close them all the way.” Sherri tapped the edge of the phone and watched the road.

“Well, it’s no wonder. You had a busy day yesterday. Check and see if there’s any further beetle damage, too, please. I’ve been fielding calls from ranchers all week, asking me if it’s true. Beetles scare them, but apparently a woman warning them is even scarier.” He sighed. “Keep me updated.” Subtle feminism bothered her but at least it was something that didn’t keep Barry from hiring a woman.

“Sure, thanks, Barry.” She hung up, placing her phone on the passenger seat. She hadn’t slept well with worried thoughts about how she felt for Kyle and what kind of worry Cyan and everyone else seemed to have for Emma. Emma herself seemed more normal than everyone else.

A car pulled in behind her on the road from the intersection she passed. Tight on her bumper, the car stuck with her. She waved them around, but they didn’t move.

She took the next left, turning up the road, passing Jonesy’s Acres and keeping an eye out for Kyle. She wouldn’t mind seeing him again, especially so soon after their time together the day before.

He liked her, even though they didn’t have much in common. The fact that he was willing to work on things they had in common mattered more than she could tell him.

She pulled to the side to let the car pass, but the vehicle slowed and didn’t move on. Sherri clutched the wheel and pulled out again. The road was too narrow. She’d never get turned around without getting stuck in a ditch. Maybe the other car was going further than the trails. She couldn’t get out of the truck, if the other car stopped when she did. After that incident with Kyle at the cinemas, she didn’t trust that people weren’t completely off their saddles.

Trees bordering the road pulled back from the shoulder as the turnout to the gravel parking lot came into view.

Turning the wheel, Sherri muttered to know one in particular, “Keep driving. Creepy…” But her words trailed off when the car stopped and then sped down the road.

“Okay, whatever. So dang weird.” But they’d driven on. She left the truck in her normal parking spot and grabbed a water bottle from the back. The day was turning out to be a hot one already.

Turning the knob to the radio, she listened for the familiar buzz, but the radio light didn’t even flash on. She forgot to charge the radio unit in all the commotion the night before between the horse and Emma’s place.

Sherri closed her eyes and bowed her head. What was she doing? She tucked her phone in her pocket and clipped the fanny pack around her waist. Already a trickle of sweat made its way down the small of her back and under her shirt tucked into her jeans.

Locking the doors, she turned at the sound of a different truck pulling into the parking area. She smiled and approached the tinted window as the rig moved onto the gravel. Closing the trail would be easier, if she just tamped down any visitors from the get-go.

After years of attempting to write fantasy stories I decided to try my hand at science fiction. I've always been a fan of sci-fi and really took to it. Like many authors, the first book you try to get out doesn't always see the light of day and that original manuscript is still waiting for its time to shine. However, that didn't slow me down, and I have three books released: Outsystem, A Path in the Darkness, and Building Victoria. These books begin the Intrepid Saga, a series of books which follow the crew of a colony ship as they make their way between the stars. The fourth book in the series will be out on November 1, 2016, and the fifth book is already in the works. During the day I am a software engineer at a company which builds sites and services around the open-source CMS named Drupal. I find that starting with a blank canvas and writing code is not that different than writing stories. When not writing stories or code I'm usually my wife and daughter, or doing carpentry--a hobby which I've been growing over the years.
